Did We Make the Right Choice?

June 18, 2021 in Disability & Inclusion - No Comments

I always wonder if we made the right decision.

Ten years ago we were faced with an impossible choice. Put our baby girl through multiple grueling surgeries in an attempt to fashion a viable leg for her……
Or do an amputation and have her fitted for a prosthetic leg?

It’s not a decision that you can flip a coin to make or one that’s made easily.  It’s one we prayed on, wrestled over, researched the hell out of, and debated for months.

And so over the years, I’ve always looked for “signs” that we made the right decision.

I had one this past week when we did our annual pictures in the sunflower fields. Callie asked our photographer to specifically take this shot to “show off” her prosthetic. She wanted the blade to be the focal point of the picture–the star of the show if you will. She was PROUD of it and wanted to celebrate that part of herself.

At that moment, in a sunflower field in Texas during sunset, my mama heart sang.

We truly did the best thing for her.

There wasn’t a better alternative.

She was whole.

Just the way she was.

For the women blooming in unexpected places…..

Hi Y'all

Hi, I’m Jaime — writer, mother, storyteller, and the heart behind The Wildflower Edit. For nearly a decade, I wrote online as The Princess and the Prosthetic, sharing my daughter’s journey with disability and the lessons our family learned along the way. It was a beautiful season — full of advocacy, connection, and community — but as my daughter grew older, I felt a shift. She deserved more autonomy. More privacy. More room to decide how she shows up in the world. And I realized something else: My own story was expanding too. Motherhood was still here. Disability was still here. But so were grief, healing, womanhood, nervous system care, feminine energy, homemaking, identity, softness… the fuller, deeper pieces of life that were ready to be spoken aloud. Whether you come for the cozy routines, the motherhood reflections, the disability advocacy, or the soft life inspiration — thank you for choosing to share this space with me. Pour a warm drink. Settle in. Let’s grow a life that feels like you again.
