Your Peace > Their Drama: Handling Family Stress During the Holidays

November 13, 2025 in Holidays - 1 Comment

The holidays are supposed to be about joy, connection, and cozy nights by the tree. But let’s be real—sometimes they feel more like walking into a live episode of family drama you never signed up for. Passive-aggressive comments, old arguments resurfacing, or that one relative who treats every dinner like a debate stage… sound familiar?

Here’s the truth: your peace is more important than their drama. This year, let’s talk about how to survive (and even enjoy) the holidays without letting family stress steal your sparkle.

Accept That You Can’t Control Other People

Repeat after me: “Their behavior is not my responsibility.” You can’t control Uncle Joe’s rants or your sibling’s competitive streak. What you can control? Your reactions. Sometimes the most powerful move is refusing to get pulled into the chaos.

Boundaries Are a Holiday Essential

Boundaries aren’t about shutting people out—they’re about letting the right energy in. Decide in advance what you will and won’t tolerate. That might look like limiting your visit to two hours, skipping certain gatherings, or refusing to discuss hot-button topics. Boundaries = peace insurance.

Have a Stress-Exit Strategy

No rule says you have to endure a full day of family stress. Drive yourself so you can leave when you need to. We are professionals at saying “We can only stay until X time because we have plans with _____ .”  This does two things for us–allows us to preemptively set a boundary with our time and protects our peace. Another tip? Step outside for a breath of fresh air. Or keep a calming practice handy (deep breaths, grounding exercises, even a playlist) to reset your nervous system in the moment.

Find Joy in Small Moments

Not every holiday memory has to revolve around family chaos. Anchor yourself in the small joys: the smell of cookies baking, your favorite holiday movie, or laughter with the cousin who gets you. Small joys remind you that stress isn’t the whole story.

Give Yourself Permission to Redefine Tradition

Sometimes the best way to handle family drama is to create new traditions. A quiet dinner at home, a holiday trip, or a cozy night in with your chosen family can feel far more fulfilling than forcing yourself into toxic dynamics year after year.

Final Thoughts

The holidays can bring out both the best and the worst in families. But you don’t have to sacrifice your peace to keep everyone else happy. With boundaries, perspective, and a focus on what actually matters, you can step away from the drama and into a holiday season that feels nourishing and calm.

This year, let your mantra be simple: my peace > their drama.

Sending you love and light this holiday season,
Jaime

For the women blooming in unexpected places…..

    Hi Y'all

Hi, I’m Jaime — writer, mother, storyteller, and the heart behind The Wildflower Edit. For nearly a decade, I wrote online as The Princess and the Prosthetic, sharing my daughter’s journey with disability and the lessons our family learned along the way. It was a beautiful season — full of advocacy, connection, and community — but as my daughter grew older, I felt a shift. She deserved more autonomy. More privacy. More room to decide how she shows up in the world. And I realized something else: My own story was expanding too. Motherhood was still here. Disability was still here. But so were grief, healing, womanhood, nervous system care, feminine energy, homemaking, identity, softness… the fuller, deeper pieces of life that were ready to be spoken aloud. Whether you come for the cozy routines, the motherhood reflections, the disability advocacy, or the soft life inspiration — thank you for choosing to share this space with me. Pour a warm drink. Settle in. Let’s grow a life that feels like you again.
